Fire Extinguishers

Simply having a fire extinguisher doesn’t mean you’re ready for any situation that arises. First you need to learn how and when to use an extinguisher. You could have the best fire extinguishers, one of every type, and even one in every room of your house, but if you don’t know how or when to use them, then it’s a waste of time. If someone has never used an extinguisher, they typically spray the agent anywhere but at the base of the fire. You’re supposed to spray the base of the fire. Check with your local fire department for demonstrations.

You’re fire extinguisher is just one part of a comprehensive fire plan, which also includes functioning smoke alarms, escape ladders, and an exterior meeting place. It also involves general knowledge of what to do in case of a fire, such as staying low in a smoky room and testing door handles for heat before opening.
